LEGOLAND CITY-Legoland Football Association president Mr Fifa revealed that his association has approved major changes to the nation's oldest cup competition, the Derby Cup, in a bid to revitalise the much maligned tournament. The cup, which has seen numerous tinkering to its rules and format since the inaugural competition in 1994 will be radically altered from its current state. Last season the perceived 8 biggest local derbies in Legoland kicked off the competition but from this season on only the 8 oldest clubs will participate, and none will have any chance of playing their local derby unless both they and their derby rivals reach the final.
Explaining the changes, Mr Fifa spoke at length. "This move will see the potential for huge derby meetings in the final, such as Legoland FC against Legoland United or Robin Rangers facing Robin Rovers, for example. The prospect of this shall excite the fans of the participating clubs thereby increasing crowd attendences and restoring the prestige of the famous tournament. We felt fans were not so excited playing their rivals at such an early stage so this should change that", he said.
The latest decision has led to praise from the nation's oldest clubs, but stern criticism has come in from those who will now no longer feature. The clubs losing out are Juventus, Roma, Lazio, Milan, Torino, Genoa, Sampdoria, Legoland Town and Legoland Celtic whilst Republic and Robin Ravers, both founded in 1993, are now included.
The cup's current holders are Serie B side Castleland United. Having won the previous five Derby Cup titles, the Castlelanders have been installed as favourites for this season's competition. Since 1999 the cup has been held over a short period, starting from early December with the final played on Christmas Eve or the day after Christmas.
