Ajax Skerries were formed in 1994 and are among the oldest football clubs in existence in Legoland. The club hails from the oldest developed urban area in the nation, Legoland Town. The club's name was in fact inspired by the ND Land football club and town, Skerries, although there are no major links between either town.
On the 6th May 2001 the Gardinian and Paperland homeware firm Woodies Limited (renamed Woodies International in February 2008) purchased the side, which was then playing in Serie B, from the Legoland Football Association for a hefty £21m. The deal was somewhat controversial at the time with the Gardinian firm accusing the association of inflating the price because it was a non-Legoland entity. The price tag was more than that paid for the then Serie A side Black Fortress Barbarians and nearly three times more than the fee paid for Sarafield United (now Sarafield Town Lock).
Nevertheless the LFA defended the price-tag stating their belief that Ajax Skerries had the potential to become one of the greatest clubs in the country.
Indeed Ajax Skerries have yet to win any major honour but are considered by many to be a sleeping giant in Legoland football. This may be because despite spending most of its history in the football league's second division, the club have traditionally attracted a handful of international standard football stars. Throughout the years these have included Marc Overmars and Haidong Hao.
The club are famous for scouting and signing talented footballers from the Northern European leagues. Their largest foreign contingent traditionally come from Vikingland, Daraland, and Pondaland. Players from such leagues are cheap in comparison to those from the continent's top leagues and the result is that in recent seasons Ajax have managed to build a Serie A side for a relatively low cost.
Managed and coached by Roberto Donadoni, the 06-07 season saw the Legoland Town club finish in seventh position earning qualifying for the 07-08 UEFA Cup. Entry in European competition was facilitated by Sampdoria's LFA Cup victory and the Genoa club's 5th place league finish. Veteran captain and record signing, midfielder Marc "the Roadrunner" Overmars, finished the club's top goalscorer in the 06-07 campaign with 11 goals, one ahead of striker Peter Vougt. Ajax's most famous and influential player would not however be playing in the UEFA Cup as Overmars, then aged 34, announced his retirement from professional football on the 10th July 2007. Overmars was immediately appointed director of football and became the first honoury member of the Ajax Skerries board.
On September 20th 2007 the club announced that the club's controlling company Woodies had appointed Odorus Aquarium as both company and club president. On the same day, Ajax Skerries adopted "The Helmets" as an official nickname in a marketing drive launched in Legoland Town. Mr Aquarium explained that the club "wished to increase their fan base by gaining support from minifigs who use helmets", a type of armoured headgear very popular in the Legoland state.
