Greentown Athletic were established in 1995 and played their first competitive football in the 1995/6 Serie D. That season the club first tasted success by finishing in third place, behind Juve Stabia and Trainline Tigers, and gaining promotion to the third division.
On the 23rd July 1996 the club merged with Imperia (est 1st June 1996) after considerable pressure from the LFA. Under the Summer League restructuring programme the League authorities desired that smaller sides would coalesce to enable newly developing non-professional teams to enter. The club opted for a new name, Greentown Imperia Athletic but decided to stay put at the Imperial Stadium.
The club only had to spend two seasons in Serie C1b before successful promotion to Serie B in 1998 when they finished in first place. In this period the club dropped Imperia from their name and reverted to being Greentown Athletic. In their first Serie B campaign the minnows finished just one point behind Inter Marino in second place and had reached the 'Holy Grail' of Legoland football - Serie A, with back-to-back promotions. All this despite selling their only highly rated player, Edy Bivi, midway through the season.
The club moved from the Imperial Stadium to the newly constructed Atletic Ground, a stadium that they could call their own. Despite halving the potential attendances (the capacity of 9,980 is the second lowest ever to feature Serie A games) the club benefited from the unique atmosphere generated by the tight arena. Edy Bivi also returned to his team for a club record £1.5m after only a few months away at the Legoland FC where he failed to make much of an impression.
In the 1999/0 championship, Edy Bivi's 19 League goals (including three hat-tricks) helped the Greentownians avoid the annual dog fight that is the relegation battle. The club finished in respectable 12th place and could look forward to a new season in the top flight. The club picked up their best results ever with impressive victories over Roma and Milan but the year's best memory was the 3-1 defeat of Legoland United.
The following season mirrored the previous. Once again Greentown Athletic finished in 12th place.
